Detox Grocery List

The first step in beginning a detox program is to detox your HOME! Here are some general guidelines about how to live in a healthy home:

Next up! Grab your reusable grocery bags, its time to go grocery shopping! While shopping, stick to the outside perimeter of the grocery store. Make sure to hit up the organic section, if your local store has one, and pick up some essential gluten-free items. Even better than the grocery store, if you town or city has a local farmer's market, make sure to pop in for a brief 'holla' to save boat loads of money on fresh, organic and local produce. NOMS!

Here's what to purchase for your detox:

An avocado for salads and on whole wheat wraps.
Benefit: Promotes heart health & offers a range of anti-inflammatory benefits

My favourite Green tea is Zen by Tazo, which can be found at Starbucks across North America. I also enjoy Lipton's Green Tea.
Benefit: Of all the variety of teas, green tea has the highest concentration of polyphenols (help get rid of free radicals!)

Bananas.
Benefit:This potassium-rich fruit helps lower blood pressure and the fiber content helps prevent heart disease.

String beans.
Benefit:The fresher, the better... avoid the canned stuff if you can.

Corn.
Benefit: Believe it or not, corn has a lot of antioxidants that help fight a variety of diseases!  There's also the fiber content that is really good for our digestive tracts.

Bokchoy.
Benefit: High in vitamin-A, vitamin-C, beta-carotene, calcium and dietary fiber.  Did I mention its an excellent addition to stirfrys??

Garlic.
Benefit: Fun fact about garlic: you can increase its health benefits by letting it hang out after you've chopped/crushed it.  This will give its special enzymes an opportunity to work harder for you! Cool huh?

Parsley
Benefits: Its special oils mean it can help neutralize particular types of carcinogens (like the ones found in cigarette smoke and charcoal grill smoke).

Bell Peppers
Benefits: Tip: Make sure you let your peppers fully ripen before you eat them! Recent studies have shown that the vitamin C content and the carotenoid content of bell peppers both increase with ripening.

Red Onions
Benefits:Help to lower your blood sugar levels and they're a great low-calorie addition to spice up a meal!

Apples.
Benefits: Apples have phytonutrients in them that can help you regulate your blood sugar.  There's also a healthy dose of fiber, which makes this an ideal snack choice!

Limes.
Benefits:Super source of vitamin c to help you fight (and prevent) colds.

Broccoli.
Benefits: Broccoli is a great addition to my detox plan (yes!) because it helps the body's natural detoxification process. It supports all steps in body's detox process, including activation, neutralization, and elimination of unwanted contaminants.

Cherry Tomatoes
Benefits: Well... this is more of a fun fact.  Organic tomatoes delivers 3x as much of cancer-fighting lycopene vs. non-organic!

Chickpeas (Hummus)
Benefits: Lots of good-for-you fiber!

Plain Yogurt
Benefits: We all know about all the special yogurts out there but my advice would be to stick to good ol' plain yogurt and flavour it the way you like.  Its very gentle on the stomach and boasts increased resistance to immune-related diseases.

Carrots
Benefits: Women who consume carrots at least twice per week significantly reduce their risk of getting glaucoma (which damages the optic nerves in your eyes).

Celery
Benefits: Ah celery, a "diet" staple.  This is a delicious snack that's a great source of vitamin c and also acts as a slight diuretic (helps flush excess fluids from the body... the unhealthy kinds of course).

Cabbage
Benefits: A cancer prevention superstar but only raw or gently cooked!  So don't overcook these bad boys!

Whole wheat Tortillas
Benefits: Mmm, I've never seen these before! They have "ancient grains" in them, which provide you with a wide-range of fibrous grains to keep you going!

Berries.
Benefits: Check out my post on these beauties :) FYI: Strawberries have huge apparent anti-aging properties (studies are just coming out on this now!)
